Independent publishers are a rare breed. They’re in it for the words, the dissemination of ideas, and the expansion of entertainment. They’re often the first to publish best-selling authors, while the diversity of their writers is much wider and daring than those found at multi-national publishing houses.

The game is weighed heavily against indie publishers. It is industry standard that retailers receive 55% of the book sale. With the remaining 45%, the indie publisher has to pay for printing, distribution, design costs, and the author. Room for an advertising budget is rare. They’re not in it for the money. The indie publishers are the least paid in the book industry.

Recognizing the plight of the small press, The Portland Independent Book Fair ensures that the participating indie publishers receive 100% of the sale, and are not charged any fee for exhibition space. Furthermore, as a FREE event open to the public, the Book Fair hopes to broaden small press readership. Indeed, the reader is also a winner at The Portland Independent Book Fair, as many titles will be offered at discounted prices.
